Blast is a non-profit initiative dedicated to transforming science education for high school students and teachers across Africa. By bridging the gap between textbook theory and laboratory practice, we aim to cultivate a new generation of curious minds.

our mission

We want to empower high school students and teachers in Africa to enrich their science curriculum through the introduction of modern biomedical equipment and hands-on experiments. Our ultimate goal is to inspire a new wave of scientific thinkers and foster their enthusiasm for scientific discovery.

In many of the schools we target, science education relies heavily on traditional teaching methods like lectures and textbooks. However, understanding complex scientific concepts requires more than just theory. Our initiative is designed to enrich traditional learning by integrating laboratory experiments and hands-on discovery. We believe that supplementing theoretical knowledge with practical experience not only solidifies understanding but also ignites a passion for scientific exploration..

What we do

Our workshops delve into topics in genetics, neuroscience, and microscopy through interactive, real-world applications. By bridging the gap between textbook theory and laboratory practice, we aim to cultivate a new generation of curious minds. We are achieving this using multiple approaches:

01

Engagement with visiting scientists

We connect high school classrooms with visiting scientists who lead interactive activities spanning genetics, genomics, and microscopy. These hands-on experiences captivate students' interest and deepen their understanding of scientific concepts.

02

Teacher training workshops

We conduct comprehensive teacher training workshops to equip educators with the necessary technical skills and resources to continue engaging their students long after our visits. By empowering teachers, we ensure sustainable impact and the continuous improvement of science education.

03

Lab donations

In partnership with local communities, we donate microscopes and other lab equipment to participating schools, enabling students to explore real-world biological samples and their local environment. With these instruments, students can conduct discovery-based experiments long after the workshops end and uncover the hidden wonders of microscopic life.

our inaugural program

In 2023, we traveled to Ghana to visit Yaa Asantewaa Girls' Senior High School, Opoku Ware High School, and the American International School as part of the 2023 World DNA Day Celebration.

We engaged students in hands-on workshops including DNA extraction from saliva, pipette practice, and a forensic science activity. We also organized a lab donation drive and delivered lab equipment to partnering high schools.

In 2024, we expanded our program within Ghana. We conducted workshops with over 300 students across five different schools.
